Penguin Guide, January 2009

Recorded live at the Sydney Opera House in 1978, this Australian Opera production by Sandro Sequi is chiefly valuable for presenting Dame Joan Sutherland in one of her most important rôles when she was still at the peak of her powers. Casta diva finds Dame Joan in glorious voice, at once powerful, creamily beautiful and wonderfully secure. With sets by Fiorella Mariani it is a traditional production, springing no surprises, encouraging the diva to relax in the rôle, never more so than in her big duet with Adalgisa, Mira o Norma, ending in a dazzling account of the cabaletta, where Margreta Elkins equally sparkles, and Richard Boynge draws light, crisply sprung playing from the orchestra.
