"The originality of [Maguy] Marin's version is uncompromisingly absorbing, with new ideas following swiftly, hot upon the dancing heels of the other. The production is shown from the point of view of a child, watching with fascination as the story develops in her doll's house... It says a great deal about Prokofiev's music that it does not sit oddly with this doll's house vision of the famous story, in which Marin manages the more serious aspects of the piece very cleverly... I doubt if I have ever seen Prokofiev's chilling chimes at midnight so effectively realized. The performances match the creator's standards, the music is well played and Arthaus Musik delivers its usual high standard of production..."
