Raymond Tuttle
Fanfare, January 2013

Marin strips the story down to its essentials. What remains of the score is conducted very ably by Yakov Kreizberg…

One would think that dancers whose faces and athletic, graceful bodies cannot be properly seen would be at a disadvantage. Instead, the doll heads and the padding force them to act out their emotions with a high level of intensity…there were moments throughout that deeply moved me.

The dancing is superb. I don’t know how Françoise Joullié was able to move her body like that, let alone convey such emotion with it, but such is the miracle of modern dance at its best…everyone’s dancing is miraculous in this production. Even viewers who don’t usually warm to this genre may find themselves heartily impressed by this unconventional take on Cinderella.

I strongly recommend this DVD to anyone with even a smidgen of interest in modern ballet. A popular and critical hit when it appeared in the late 1980s, it remains viable and looks great on DVD. © 2013 Fanfare Read complete review

Robert Cummings
Classical Net, October 2012

When this Maguy Marin production of Prokofiev’s Cinderella premiered at various venues across the globe in the 1980s it was generally critically acclaimed. It is certainly imaginative and brilliantly conceived…

…Yakov Kreisberg draws fine, spirited playing from the orchestra and the dancing is excellent. Françoise Joullié as Cinderella and Bernard Cauchard as the Prince are especially splendid. The camera work and sound reproduction are also quite good here…those with adventurous or modern tastes should find this a most interesting, even fascinating offering. © 2012 Classical Net Read complete review
