It is good to have as consummate an actress as Elisabeth Söderström as Leonore in this vintage Glyndebourne account of Fidelio, recorded in 1979. That was well before the new opera house was built there; in the old, small auditorium there is no question of Söderström’s pure soprano being overwhelmed…Bernard Haitink conducts a powerful performance, with Kurt Appelgren a superb Rocco, Elizabeth Gale a sweet Marzelline, and Antond de Ridder an unstrained Florestan. Though Robert Allman is a rather gritty-toned Pizarro, that goes well with the character. John Busy’s sets for Peter Hall’s production vividly capture the domestic scenes at the start. A clear first choice on DVD.
