Jeremy Nicholas
Classic FM, June 2008

On the first of the two DVDs, after a 10-minute rapid-fire spoken introduction to the work (subtitles available), the Italian pianist Andrea Bacchetti plays Bach's 'Air and 30 variations' on a fine Fazioli grand piano in the bright acoustic of a room in the lavish Villa Trissino Marzotto, Vincenza. On the accompanying CD, Bacchetti plays the whole work again, adopting consistently faster tempi, in the more focused acoustic of the Teatro Chiabrera, Savona. Fine – but with two performances of the same work, and especially as the filmed version is so unimaginatively directed, why not use the DVD's facilities to learn more about the music or even follow the score?

Gramophone, April 2008

On screen, the Villa Trissino Marzotto in Vicenza, Italy, conveys a spacious yet intimate impression that totally jibes with how Andrea Bacchetti presents Bach’s Goldberg Variations in a sensitively photographed and beautifully engineered DVD performance.

While Bacchetti can do detached and dry-point articulation to Gouldian specifications, he’s more about singing lines and warm sonorities. He observes all of the repeats save for those in the Aria da capo, and lavishes them with elaborate ornaments and melodic embellishments. © 2008 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
