Critics Pick Recordings to Celebrate Verdi’s Bicentennial

Verdi’s subtle balance of the epic and the miniature makes him difficult to stage…but the director Peter Konwitschny, taking on “Don Carlos” (in the original French) at the Vienna State Opera in 2004, brilliantly exploits the dialectic of personal and political. He heightens the domestic-drama aspect in certain scenes and pushes the auto-da-fé into the auditorium and lobby, where it becomes a fourth-wall-breaking media spectacle. Verdi is brought, with exuberance and intelligence, into our time. © 2013 The New York Times
