Mark Sealey
Classical Net, February 2013

The bonus rehearsal session in which Fischer-Dieskau and Brendel discuss and prepare their performance is worth the very reasonable…price of the set alone…

Fischer-Dieskau’s Winterreise, is legendary of course. In command not only of every syllable, but every nuance for the entire duration, the baritone has the additional, and surely essential, talent of projecting the harmonies, tonalities, tempi and even the pauses in such a way that the overall tragedy and hopelessness of the cycle is both unmissable in their impact and searing, shocking in emotion…

Brendel…is right where he should be—at every turn. Listen to the delicacy yet forcefulness of his accompaniment at the start of “Erstarrung”…He neither pushes nor holds back, neither gratuitously complements nor contrasts.

Fischer-Dieskau’s singing [in Die Schöne Müllerin] is fresh, unlabored and highly communicative. He never lacks enthusiasm. But articulates the words of each song as much to contribute to an overall sense of the cycle’s sentiment as gauchely to “explain” events or sentiments.

Admirers of Fischer-Dieskau shouldn’t hesitate to buy and get to know this set. It has all the magic that he always brought to Schubert, these cycles and the art of the Lied. © 2013 Classical Net Read complete review

Infodad.com, December 2012

Two of the most interesting classical-music videos to come along in quite a while have shown up just in time for the Christmas season…The two-video set of late-in-life performances of Schubert’s Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin by one of their preeminent interpreters, the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, is a genuinely interesting musical and visual document. The understanding of the music is superb, the delving into its emotional heart excellent throughout…[Fischer-Dieskau’s] musicianship is at the highest level throughout. This version of Winterreise, an even bleaker cycle, was recorded in 1979…the autumnal tone of Fischer-Dieskau’s voice fits the wintry story very well indeed, producing a set of variations on a theme of despair that extracts considerable emotional intensity without ever wallowing in depression. Fischer-Dieskau was an outstanding interpreter of these cycles, one of the best of all…These particular interpretations…are superb in many ways and on many levels, and the collaborations with Brendel and Schiff—plus the rehearsal video and a Fischer-Dieskau interview recorded in 1985—make this two-DVD set a wonderful one in wintertime or anytime. © 2012 Infodad.com Read complete review
