Mike Ashman
Gramophone, April 2012

VERDI, G.: Traviata (La) (Graz Opera, 2011) (NTSC) 101587
VERDI, G.: Traviata (La) (Graz Opera, 2011) (Blu-ray, Full-HD) 108036

the Graz version feels like a return to authentic original instrument practices. Director Konwitschny remembers that Verdi wanted the show set in modern dress and that only the Zeffirellis of this world think that Flora’s party is a ballet. Marlis Petersen…James Rutherford…and Italian tenor Giuseppe Varano…are intensely involved and in good vocal shape. Tecwyn Evans conducts with great rhythmic acuity and finds pace and tension without rushing or becoming unduly loud. An outstanding issue and a quite draining experience. © 2012 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Robert Cummings
Classical Net, February 2012

Marlis Petersen turns in an excellent portrayal of Violetta. Her Ah fors è lui, from Act 1 is stunning, and her Act 3 Addio del passato is darkly powerful and meltingly beautiful. She is simply a splendid Violetta throughout. Giuseppe Varano…is also good…James Rutherford is also impressive as Germont, and the rest of the cast is quite fine…Tecwyn Evans draws fine, crisp playing from the orchestra, scaling things down a bit to give the performance a more intimate sense. The chorus sings well and the sound reproduction and camera work are excellent. In sum, one might call this a deliberately modest production, an attempt to take on a more introspective approach to this complex opera. Clearly, by cutting some of the more splashy music and imparting an understated character to the proceedings, this production moves away from most traditional ones of this opera…everything else worked quite well…Peter Konwitschny’s barren stage approach actually strikes the viewer… © 2012 Classical Net Read complete review

Audiophile Audition, January 2012

The sound on this production is very good, and the visuals—such as they are—very well focused…The principles…are all excellent… © 2012 Audiophile Audition Read complete review
