Richard Sininger
American Record Guide, January 2014

The performance on this recording serves the work well. All four performers…sing quite well.

The packaging of this recording is exemplary. A fine recording of a rare work! © 2014 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Fanfare, January 2014

A previous recording…was taken from a 1976 Radio France broadcast…the singers in this provincial opera company hold their own with the Radio France cast and deliver their own uncut dialog with flair. In every respect, I prefer this new one. The orchestra is in the background but is prominent enough and clearly recorded. Given the high quality of this offering, I believe that anyone who is curious about Bizet’s first stage work…can safely satisfy that curiosity with this recording. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Opera News, December 2013

…everyone is good…the cast of four functions as an excellent ensemble under conductor Samuel Jean…The overture is a particular delight, crisp and tuneful…

Laurette (soprano Marie-Bénédicte Souquet) has a sentimental romance with an impressive high cadenza at the end; while Silvio/Pasquin/Dr. Miracle (tenor Jérôme Billy) in his disguise as Pasquin, delivers comic couplets with relish and verve. Isabelle Druet, a mezzo with a plummy, colorful timbre, fills out the cast as Laurette’s surprisingly accommodating stepmother. The all-French cast makes the most of the extensive dialogue, which moves the plot along with clarity and immediacy. © 2013 Opera News Read complete review

Richard Lawrence
Gramophone, November 2013

Bizet’s music is light and tuneful…The excellent overture, full of piquant modulations, deserves to be heard as a concert piece.

Samuel Jean gets neat playing from his Orchestre Lyrique de Région Avignon Provence…Pierre-Yves Pruvot blusters effectively as the Podestat, and Jérôme Billy…makes an engaging Silvio. The best singing comes from Marie-Bénédicte Souquet, touching in her Romance. © 2013 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Steven Bergman
EDGE Atlanta, August 2013

Looking for a pleasant afternoon listen? “Le Docteur Miracle,” an early operetta from Georges Bizet…is now available in this new release from Timpani Records, and the sound and performance quality of this soft-spoken, yet enjoyable work…makes for an appropriate choice while relaxing and relishing a good weather day.

The recording is easy on the ears, and an enjoyable single-sitting listen…Conductor Samuel Jean guides the Orchestre Lyrique de Région Avignon Provence on his debut opera recording confidently through this lite tale of Le Podestat…

The spoken portions of the libretto are included on the CD, and they seamlessly help to understand the placement of the song cues, in addition to showing off the respectable acting skills of the four singers. The four performers create an accessible performance of this operetta that is easy to digest… © 2013 EDGE Atlanta Read complete review

Samuel Jean leads the orchestra with a fine light touch in this recording, and all four singers play their stylized roles quite well…Le Docteur Miracle is a pleasant, well-composed, nicely turned work with plenty of spirit and an effective handling of operetta conventions… © 2013 Infodad.com Read complete review

…having this impeccable performance on disc will please Bizet fans and collectors of the label’s exemplary series of neglected French works. The small cast is quite appealing and amusing, with Marie-Bénédicte Souquet as a charming Laurette, Isabelle Druet as Véronique, Pierre-Yves Pruvot as the mayor, and Jérôme Billy in the dual role of Silvio and Doctor Miracle. Their singing and acting are engaging and fun… The audio is excellent, with a credible sense of stage movement and presence, as well as a warm orchestral sound. © 2013 Allmusic.com Read complete review
