Bradley Winterton
Taipei Times, August 2014

My enthusiasm of the month is undoubtedly for the young Chinese violinist Yang Tianwa.

…her recordings on Naxos have received high praise, and her strong style, somber and deeply admirable, hits you the moment she starts playing. It’s as if she’s carving a sculpture out of a log, and then hurling it at you.

The video is typical of her strengths (she doesn’t seem to have any weaknesses)…she renders Tchaikovsky’s and Brahms’ violin concertos with sonorous tones and great energy, then goes on to play an excerpt from Ysaye’s Violin Sonata No: 3 just to show what technical brilliance she’s capable of. © 2014 Taipei Times Read complete review

David's Review Corner, March 2014

Tianwa Yang, is one of the most prodigiously gifted violinists of our time, this remarkable DVD offering two frequently performed concertos for the instrument. From the opening violin entry in the Tchaikovsky concerto, you realise we have embarked on a masterclass of violin technique. For those who play a string instrument, the sight of her bowing arm is something to drool over, for it is perfect in every way, while the tone she can command achieved without undue force. By the time we reach the first movement cadenza, we have seen the agility of her left hand, and now as it flies around the fingerboard with harmonics perfectly centered so that they ring like beautiful bells. It is a highly energised finale…Then it is pure transformation for the Brahms concerto, her interpretation belonging to those who offer Germanic weight and tonal warmth…Then to crown that performance she gave the audience a lengthy encore with Ysaye’s fiendishly difficult Third Sonata, played with both fire and brilliance…under the watchful guidance of Vladimir Lande, the [orchestra] offer very responsive support. Remarkable. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
