Penguin Guide, January 2009

Koopman chooses the earlier, E flat major version of the Magnificat, and it makes a magnificent début on DVD, recorded at St Thomas’s Church, Leipzig, where, like its Kuhnau coupling, it was first heard. The performance is thrilling, with its bolder E flat major trumpets and splendidly incisive choral contribution. The soloists too are first class, both individually and as a team. Like Suzuki, Koopman offers the Kuhnau setting and includes also a fine performance of the cantata Meine Seele erherbt den Herren, which has associations with the more ambitious work. The camera is used sensibly and follows the music from soloists to chorus to instrumentalists. The cantata too is very successful in all respects.
