Penguin Guide, January 2009

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach wrote three superb oratorios, of which this is the last and, as he thought himself, the finest, given a masterly performance here under Sigiswald Kuijken. All three of the soloists sing with clear, fresh tone, the tenor of Christoph Genz nicely related to the baritone of Stephan Genz, while the choir, Ex Tempore, brings bite and clarity to the dramatic choruses, with each half ending on an elaborate fugue…musically very enjoyable, and the coupling of Johann Sebastian’s Ascension Cantata is superbly done.

Penguin Guide, January 2009

It was a happy idea to combine a performance of Bach’s Ascension Cantata, Lobett Got with his son’s Ascension Oratorio, although the juxtaposition shows that while the latter is a fine work, Johann Sebastian’s cantata is a supreme masterpiece. It is a splendidly sung here, with excellent soloists and a first-class period-instrumental group, all working together as a team. The result is very enjoyable indeed, and beautifully recorded.
