Lawson Taitte
The Dallas Morning News, October 2006

PERSONAL FAVORITE: Martha Argerich has recorded audio-only versions of the Schumann concerto with a half-dozen different conductors, and she has done at least one previous video version. It's safe to say that it's one of her signature works. In her youth, she ran away with the wild side of the piece. Now she balances the two sides of the composer's nature more evenly. It's fun to watch her no-nonsense performance style, too. She's way too efficient to moon over the keyboard for effect.

HOME BASE: Riccardo Chailly conducts his new orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, which is actually one of the oldest in Europe, connected to Mendelssohn and Schumann himself. His way with the symphony is authoritative, and he gives us a peek at some rare orchestrations of Schumann piano works as a bonus.

BOTTOM LINE: Age cannot wither Ms. Argerich, nor custom stifle her infinite variety.
