Giv Cornfield
The New Recordings, Cliffs Classics, November 2007

This is an 80th birthday gala concert, a tribute to veteran conductor Kurt Masur, who has led this orchestra for thirty years. It's a pops program, consisting of relatively short, popular works such as the Tchaikovsky 'Capriccio Italien' and Dukas' 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' - interspersed with tidbits by a variety of composers, old and modern - the whole showcasing Masur's wide range of tastes, and the ability of this outstanding orchestra to perform the music idiomatically, no matter the genre. The performance was recorded live, and suffers from an excess verbosity, mostly by the host, Harald Schmidt, who gets carried away by his own charm. I have never heard a better Capriccio Italien; that alone makes the disc worth having.
