Giv Cornfield
The New Recordings, Cliffs Classics, July 2009

This concert was held on the occasion of the 2008 Nobel Prize Awards of December 2008. The Dvorak came first—it’s hard not to enjoy this beautiful, melodic and in turn dramatic music—and Sir Eliot is such a simpatico conductor. The Mozart Mass is a work of genius from the very opening chord. It is probably one of his most operatic sacred works, wherein the vocal heavy lifting as it were is assigned to the soprano (Miah Persson) and alto (Ann Hallenberg), with the tenor and bass joining late in the work. At the risk of sounding like a prude, might one question the ample display of bosom and its suitability to the occasion?
