Leslie Wright
MusicWeb International, July 2013

The video aspect is done very well with many close-up shots of individual players during their solo passages and of the orchestra sections as appropriate. There’s also plenty of Sir Simon Rattle, who conducts as much with his face as with his hands. The picture quality of the DVD is very good, nice and clear…

I imagine this recording would be a must for anyone lucky enough to have attended the concert, but the performances are such that they can be generally recommended as well. Rattle…characterizes each piece well and his ear for balance and dynamics is impeccable. The Rachmaninov is very dark, capturing the Russianness of the music. The English horn and oboe solos are particularly beautiful.

The Mahler First…is not only convincing, but is ravishingly played.

…this DVD…is one that I am sure to return to when I want to hear and see the two works performed as well as they are here. © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Berlin Philharmonic in Singapore - RACHMANINOV, S.: Symphonic Dances / MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 1 (Rattle) (NTSC) 2058908
Berlin Philharmonic in Singapore - RACHMANINOV, S.: Symphonic Dances / MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 1, ‘Titan’ (Rattle) (3D Blu-ray, Full-HD) 2058904

Rattle, conducting both works from memory, presents mostly mainstream interpretations, and the Philharmoniker delivers polished performances.

The production is quite good; sound is impressive for a live event, and the video direction gives us many closeups of principal wind players when their parts are prominent. The picture is decent on the DVD, but spectacular on the Blu-ray…the colors are fantastic…

Recommended to collectors of concert videos. © 2013 Fanfare Read complete review

Berlin Philharmonic in Singapore - RACHMANINOV, S.: Symphonic Dances / MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 1, ‘Titan’ (Rattle) (3D Blu-ray, Full-HD) 2058904

Symphonic Dances was Rachmaninov’s last work, composed the year of his death, and in it he combines energy and his gift for writing haunting melodies with nostalgia for his homeland…the performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 is glorious. The orchestra takes us expertly through the moodiness of movement one, and the second movement is thrilling…The camera work is spectacular and the audio quality is stunning. Highly recommended. © 2013 Music Media Monthly Read complete review

These Berlin Philharmonic/Sir Simon Rattle DVDs are terrific! The BPO is in top form throughout, and virtuosity of individual players is what one would expect. Audio is extraordinarily fine—those mighty Mahler climaxes will thrill audiophiles. This is an exciting release! © 2013 ClassicalCDReview.com Read complete review

My Classical Notes, January 2013

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra…present Mahler’s unique and breathtaking First Symphony—once dubbed “Titan” in homage to Romantic novelist Jean Paul—as well as Rachmaninov’s wonderful Symphonic Dances.

In this concert, the Berliner Philharmoniker beautifully capture Mahler’s love of nature, and also Rachmaninov’s nostalgic memories of Russia. © 2013 My Classsical Notes Read complete review
