BEETHOVEN, L. van: Piano Sonatas (Complete), Vol. 4 (Barenboim, 1983-1984) (NTSC) 2066508

As a conductor, [Barenboim] brings to his sonata performances great insight into the structure and architecture of the music.

The three DVDs here…do include works from the early, middle and late periods. Barenboim brings to these a freshness of approach, and sensitivity. His expressive powers are wondrous and he captures the full range of emotions that these works have to offer. You get the feeling that he really understands this music and that he has an improvisatory and spontaneous approach. Tempi for me are perfect. He has the full range of dynamic control, I loved the pianissimo opening of the Appassionata and the exquisite way he opens Les Adieux with a gentle piano, setting the atmosphere and drawing the listener into the music to share his experience. © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review
