Steven Ritter
Audiophile Audition, October 2013

…Waltraud Meier…gives a magnificent performance of the unfaithful, confused, anti-heroine Marie. Her performance is full of sympathy, completely on top of the role in every manner, and sung with fire and subtlety. Franz Grundheber is about as disconcerting and manically remorseful as any Wozzeck portrayal I have seen or heard…And Hauptmann, the Captain who first exploits Wozzeck’s weaknesses, if played to wonderfully creepy effect by Graham Clarke. The rest of the cast is very good…definitely recommended. © 2013 Audiophile Audition Read complete review

Stephen Smoliar, June 2013

…under Barenboim’s musical guidance, all of the vocalists were more than capable in capturing Berg’s musical intentions. Thus, through such subtle devices as facial expressions and body language, they could compensate for much of the content that Chéreau had chosen so deliberately to disregard. The result is a thoroughly harrowing account of the opera’s intense narrative that tends, at least on occasion, to be reinforced by visual impressions. © 2013 Read complete review
