Penguin Guide, January 2009

A poignant occasion, as this captures the last appearance of Bernstein with the Vienna Philharmonic. Although he had recorded Mahler symphonies with his much-loved Vienna Orchestra, Bernstein was slow to turn to Bruckner, believing that Karajan’s recordings of them could hardly be surpassed. Now, some years after Bruckner’s death and only a year before his own, he performed the Ninth at the Grosser Musikvereinsaal during a week in late February and early March, and this record is a compilation of these. A powerful document, which will make a special appeal to admirers of this remarkable partnership and this great work. Unobtrusive camerawork, which invariably places the listener-viewer where he would wish to be.
