Penguin Guide, January 2009

Here is as perfect a coupling as you will ever find on record: Haydn’s three finest concertos, given outstanding performances, with the ASMF in sparkling form, the Cello concertos led by Iona Brown and the D major Piano Concerto with Marriner conducting. Rostropovich is unsurpassed in the works for cello, playing with great warmth and with many subtle touches, using the widest range of dynamic. Homero Francesch articulates with buoyant crispness of style and no less sophistication of detail. In short, this is wonderfully enjoyable, both to watch and to be involved in, for Rostropovich in particular is always fascinating visually, as he is so completely involved in the music. The Cello Concertos were recorded in 1975 (in the London Henry Wood Hall) and the Piano Concerto in 1982 against the rich backcloth of the Bayreuth Opernhaus, and the sound is splendidly clear and vivid. This is among the most recommendable of all concerto DVDs.
