Giv Cornfield
The New Recordings, Cliffs Classics, September 2008

A unique aspect of the Hagen quartet is that three siblings: Veronika, Lukas and Rainer Hagen set the tone, and 2nd violinist Rainer Schmidt blends perfectly into this homogeneous ensemble. They project a unity of concept rare in any string quartet, even across a spectrum as wide as that present in the quartets that Mozart dedicated to his elder mentor Haydn. Anxious to make a favourable impression, Mozart imbued this music with learned counterpoint and sometimes tortuous harmony, at the expense of the more common melodic flights of fancy that are the hallmark of his instrumental music. This is a set of quartets for the serious music lover, best enjoyed with score in hand.
