Giv Cornfield
The New Recordings, Cliffs Classics, April 2009

Schubert’s masterpiece was recorded in an ideal setting: the high-ceilinged, hard surfaced baroque library in Vorau, Austria. Even before the musicians start to play, one could anticipate the aural feast that was to follow. This family quartet plays with a unity of purpose and dedication that could serve as a model to all such groups. The music, a towering masterpiece of the quartet repertoire needs no comment—it is performed to perfection. The Ravel work, recorded 13 years later in Salzburg, is also given a great performance, although works written a century apart make for rather strange bedfellows.
