Charles H Parsons
American Record Guide, November 2013

The acting is highly detailed and realistic. It grabs the audience by the throat, compelling it to partake of the drama. It’s grim and powerful. Tcherniakov’s handling of the chorus is particularly effective.

All the singers command vocal and dramatic attention. Towering over all is Burchuladze: plenty of vocal power (a bit on the vintage side), a brutal soul, but so engaging—a character I love to hate.

The huge chorus roars, croons, and sweeps all before it with an unstoppable fury. Nagano has his orchestra under control. A tour-deforce. © 2013 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Bill White
Fanfare, March 2013

…the musical contribution is very strong. Beginning with conductor Kent Nagano and the Bavarian State Orchestra, the chorus, and the principal singers, this is a very well-played and well-sung production. A special commendation should go out to dramatic mezzo-soprano Doris Soffel in the role of Marfa. She is a fine singer and dramatically carries much of the opera on her back. Also notable is Ukrainian bass Anatoli Kotscherga as Dosifey, who possesses perhaps the finest voice in the opera and provides so much of the vocal allure here as well as a fine portrayal. Tenor Klaus Florian Vogt as Andrei Khovansky, baritone Valery Alexejev as Boyer Shaklovity, and tenor John Daszak as Prince Vasily Golitsyn also acquit themselves admirably. The real star musically is the fine Bavarian State Opera chorus…

I can easily recommend the musical portion of this production as one of the best available… © 2013 Fanfare Read complete review

The Flip Side, October 2012

…the singers (led by John Daszak and Valery Alexejev) and Bayerische Staatsoper Orchestra, led by conductor Kent Nagano, stirringly perform what [Modest Mussorgsky]…described as a “national music drama.” The…visuals do look clear in hi-def, and the music sounds fantastic. © 2012 The Flip Side Read complete review
