SCHUMANN, R.: Symphonies Nos. 1-4 / SCHUMANN AT PIER2 (Documentary) (German Chamber Philharmonic, P. Jarvi) (NTSC) 711908
SCHUMANN, R.: Symphonies Nos. 1-4 / SCHUMANN AT PIER2 (Documentary) (German Chamber Philharmonic, P. Jarvi) (Blu-ray, HD) 712004

Past the goonish narrator and some clunky set‑pieces, this film of Schumann’s symphonies feels true to both man and music, with hungry, questing performances (enriched by documentary contributions from the players themselves) that dispel the Beethovenian shadows felt by Brahms and take us deep into this wild and unkempt contribution to the symphonic canon, and its inheritance – from song and Bach. © Gramophone

This is the sort of set that makes me grateful that classical recordings are still being made. As a refresher course in Schumann symphonies, you won’t find anything better: the overall transparency of each performance, the tautness, interpretative ‘edge’ (sometimes bordering on danger), warmth and determination to exploit to the full the many contrasts that keep each score so endlessly stimulating, all these virtues and more serve to focus the music in a unique way.

…I can’t imagine any sensitive music lover failing to respond to this artistically exceptional, beautifully filmed and expertly engineered set. It certainly gave me a great deal of pleasure. © 2013 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

The WholeNote, February 2013

These indispensible performances radiate from the inside…exciting, highly charged and, where called for, meltingly poetic. Textures are sinewy but never lean. Audio and video are state of the art.

In addition to four definitive performances there is an appreciation of these original scores. Movement by movement, we are treated to extracts from the rehearsals with observations and illustrations from some of the players but most informative and enlightening are Jarvi’s discerning thoughts and annotations…The proof is here to be heard. © 2013 The WholeNote Read complete review

Fulvue Drive-in, December 2012

Schumann At Pier 2 features Paavo Jarvi conducting the legends symphonies in a converted near-water location in two programs. One is the actual concert at 146 minutes and the other a documentary by Christian Berger at 98 minutes that does a terrific job of showing the production and performances, while examining the players and artist who has brought them all together. Hope this inspires C Major/Unitel Classica to issue more such double programs in what is as good a Schumann release as we have covered to date. © 2012 Fulvue Drive-in Read complete review
