Dave Billinge
MusicWeb International, November 2013

It really was not necessary to provide spurious drama and a linking narration to this slice of recent operatic history. I want to thank director Christoph von Bock for just letting the participants speak for themselves throughout this film. It is hard to imagine a more nerve-wracking situation than that faced by the team in Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colón and the film director himself. This when their internationally known director Katarina Wagner walked out on a production which had not even got off the ground, and had declared the working conditions to be impossible. Five weeks later, with a new director, the seven-hour Ring was performed to acclaim in the packed opera house.

The sense of relief when the opening performance actually happens left me wanting to cheer along with the cast and audience. If there were a prize for operatic catastrophe avoidance, this would have to win outright. © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Documentaries are not usually known for their great sound but this one has crisp dialogue and the intermittent musical snippets are very well reproduced in both soundtrack versions.

The brilliance of this documentary, and it is brilliant, is how it captures the inchoate process of rethinking iconic works that we have had for more than a century. Films like this are few and far between, considering the brilliant editing, the production constraints, and the obstacles in the way…The Colón Ring is a vibrant testimonial to art overcoming all odds. Highly recommended. © 2013 Blu-rayDefinition.com Read complete review

This fascinating documentary charts it all, from Wagner’s rather petulant exit, halting re-entrance, and ultimate departure, through the frenetic rehearsal process.

Colors and contrast are fine…and the entire documentary sports decent detail.

The Colón Ring: Wagner in Buenos Aires is a really fascinating documentary about artists struggling to keep everything from falling apart. Recommended. © 2013 Blu-ray.com Read complete review
