The Kapell performance is the greatest account of the Khachaturian—ever! Quite electrifying and inspiriting, although Koussevitzky’s presence at the helm also has something to do with it. The same must also be said for the Prokofiev. The Naxos transfer gives us the Prokofiev, which is equally remarkable.
“During the past few years Naxos has carved out a considerable piece of the historic reissue market simply by providing shellac–era favorites in newly minted transfers at budget price. Many of these releases equal or surpass competing transfers available on mid–to–full–price independent and major labels.”
