Jerry Dubins
Fanfare, December 2004

“Wilhelm Backhaus was one of the keyboard giants of the first half of the 20th century, a real powerhouse of a pianist…Backhaus was at the height of his technical command and interpretive powers. The concerto is quite a stunner. Whatever they were doing in the Abbey Road studios in 1932, the recording belies its age by at least two decades. The sound is full and balanced, lacking neither in frequency response nor dynamic range. Backhaus is electrifying. The sheer energy and strength of the forty–eight–year–old pianist are amazing. There is such solidity and depth to his tone that I envision a Goliath at the keyboard. Every note is in tune and in place, and Backhaus and Boult obviously shared a common vision of this piece…Forget that this CD is part of Naxos’s Historical series. Without doubt, it is one of the very best Brahms Firsts that has been committed to disc, regardless of vintage. Obviously, anyone interested in the pianist will want this disc. But anyone with the slightest interest in Brahms needs to own this recording, its historical value not withstanding.”
