These classical accounts have rarely been out of the catalogue. Keith Hardwick’s 1991 transfers of the eight-CD EMI Références set have been replaced by new ones by Andrew Walter which have considerably more freshness, smoothness and transparency. There are some marvelous things, including a magnificent Waldstein and the final Opp. 109–111, which have arguably never been surpassed since they were made in 1932.
UK Naxos Quotes December 2004 "Superbly remastered by Mark Obert-Thorn, these five sonatas show that Schnabel's performances, however deeply considered, emerged fresh and spontaneous with a raciness and eloquence all his own. Volume 8 is eagerly awaited."
