The overall effect of this selection of songs, which runs a very generous eighty minutes, is one of a festival of glorious words.
Most of this music was not intended to be sung by one singer, but Helene Gjerris covers it all with assurance. Given Nørgård’s spare use of instruments…she must carry much of the expression alone, and she always succeeds. She and Nørgård have an uncanny sense of the way music can portray the outdoors, something that gives this disc an arresting opening in the post-Mahlerian desolate landscape of “Jag lyssnar till vinden” and a chilly late arrival in “Nu är det sommermorgen.” © 2013 Opera News Read complete review
Helene Gjerris has been singing Per Nørgård’s songs for more than 25 years and this disc is the fruit of that experience…
…the kaleidoscopic vocal colours of the Hughes setting in Day and Night are spot-on. In between there is the exploratory post-expressionist beauty that Nørgård has made his own. This…is a reference disc for collectors of Nørgård and serious contemporary song, and performances, recording and presentation all do the music proud. © 2013 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
