Idil Biret readily captures the graceful intimacy of the A flat and B flat Intermezzi. Of the two Rhapsodies, the second is particularly fine, boldly spontaneous, its dark colouring caught well. The Fantasias, Op. 116, bring some beautifully reflective playing, notably in the three Intermezzi grouped together (in E major and E minor), while the framing G minor and D minor Capriccios are passionately felt, the latter ending the recital strongly. This is all impressively characterized Brahms playing, and the recording does not lack sonority.
