Like Barry Wordsworth’s recordings of Mozart symphonies, with the Capella Istropolitana on the Naxos label, this Haydn collection provides a series of outstanding bargains at the lowest budget price. The sound is not quite as clean and immediate as in the Mozart series, a little boomy at times in fact, and Wordsworth’s preference for relatively relaxed speeds is a little more marked here than in Mozart, but the varied choice of works on each disc is most attractive. At their modest cost, these are well worth collecting.

Classic CD, June 1991

"Crisp control and clarity of texture. Each disc contains three symphonies well-grouped to represent different periods."

Penguin Guide

"each disc is most attractive"

Gramophone

"an almost ridiculous bargain"
