On Naxos we have the normal LP coupling of the Sinfonietta and Taras Bulba, but with the Lachian Dances thrown in for good measure, all played by musicians steeped in the Janáček tradition—and all at a very modest cost. These are excellent performances; the recording, made in a fairly resonant studio, is natural and free form any artificially spotlit balance.
"More meaty and challenging, though, is the Naxos collection of works by Janacek superbly rendered by the Slovak Radio Orchestra under Ondrej Lenard. The familiar Sinfonietta and Taras Bulba rhapsody are here preceded by his delightful Lachian Dances. This would be a high recommendation at normal new classics prices, let alone."
