Penguin Guide, January 2009

Dong-Suk Kang, immaculate in his intonation, plays the Elgar with fire and urgency. This is very different from most latter-day performances, with markedly faster speeds; yet those speeds relate more closely than usual to the metronome markings in the score, and they never get in the way of Kang’s ability to feel Elgarian rubato naturally, guided by the warmly understanding conducting of Adrian Leaper. Irrespective of price, this is a keenly competitive version, with excellent, wide-ranging, digital sound, if with rather too forward a balance for the soloist.

Gramophone
