BEETHOVEN: String Quartets Op. 132 and H. 34 8.554592

The Kodály have the benefit of very good recorded sound, with a particularly good balance, and the actual playing is very fine, with judiciously chosen tempi and expertly moulded phrasing. Both the Rasumovsky Quartets here are very good indeed: thoughtful, decently paced and thoroughly musical accounts, which will give satisfaction. No one getting any of these discs is likely to be disappointed…

Jed Distler
ClassicsToday.com, May 2000

"As the Naxos Beethoven Quartet cycle heads toward completion, the Kodaly Quartet turns in some of its finest playing to date. Particularly impressive in the E-flat Op. 127 quartet, the four players spin out the second movement variations with pliant lyricism, effecting gorgeously shaded dynamic contrasts in the Scherzando Vivace... I like the dark charm they bring to the Minuet movement. The fugal finale is taken slightly under Beethoven's all-but-impossible metronome indication...[and] the results gain in linear clarity and uplifting momentum. An attractive coupling, all told, and worth much more than its bargain price."

Duncan Druce
Gramophone, January 2000

"Here the group sounds wonderfully well together, both literally and in the way it feels the music - lots of little details come out clearly and with character, yet without having to be exaggerated. Attractive, worm recorded sound together with playing of such quality make this a real bargain."
