Penguin Guide, January 2009

PROKOFIEV, S.: Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 3 and 4 (Paik, Polish National Radio Symphony, Wit) 8.550566
PROKOFIEV: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 5 8.550565

Kun Woo Paik’s playing throughout these five concertos has exhilarating bravura. Tempi are dangerously fast at times and occasionally he has the orchestra almost scampering to keep up with him but they do, and the result is often electrifying. The famous theme and variations central movement of the Third Concerto is played with great diversity of mood and style and the darkly expressive Larghetto of No. 5 is very finely done. The First Concerto, which comes last on the first CD has great freshness and compares well with almost any version on disc. In short, with vivid recording in the Concert Hall of Polish Radio, which has plenty of ambience, this set is enormously stimulating and a remarkable bargain. It has far better sound than the remastered Decca recording for Ashkenazy.

Rick Phillips
CBC, March 2003

"Dollar for dollar, you'd be hard-pressed to find another complete set of the Prokofiev Piano Concertos that rivals this one. Kun Woo Paik is thrilling, the recorded sound is clean and vivid. And at budget price, or under $10 for each of the two CDs, available individually, it's a great bargain."

CD Review, February 1993

...remarkable singing piano tone and incomparable technique...These are all fine performances and I doubt whether they will be superceded in this price range for some time to come.

BBC Music Magazine

"Kun Woo Paik's particular qualities are best revealed in the most popular, tuneful and elegant of these concertos - the Third"

American Record Guide

"This is compelling music-making with sonics to match"

Classic CD

"an outstanding bargain"

Classics
