Penguin Guide, January 2009

On the bargain Naxos label comes a warmly sympathetic version of the Symphony No. 1 from the BBC Philharmonic under George Hurst. Masterly with Elgarian rubato, he refreshingly chooses speeds faster than have become the norm, closer to those of Elgar himself. No one will be disappointed with Hurst’s powerful reading, well coupled with the Imperial March.

Gramophone

"On this evidence, George Hurst is a breezy, no-nonsense Elgarian"

CD Review

"in its own right combines the virtues of all other current competitors"

Elgar Society Journal

"However many discs of the symphony you have, this is well worth investigating"

In Tune International (UK)

"Here's an Elgar First for those who think they dislike the piece - a performance that can make converts. Recommended"
