Penguin Guide, January 2009

The Naxos version of Vaughan William’s London Symphony, coupled with the Wasps Overture, is powerful and dedicated. Kees Bakels draws ravishing sounds from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, notably the strings, with the Scherzo cleanly pointed and the slow movement both warm-hearted and refined, and with pianissimos that have you catching the breath. The problem is the extreme range of dynamic in the recording. A thrilling experience nonetheless.
