Penguin Guide, January 2009

HAYDN: String Quartets, Op. 9, Nos. 1, 3 and 4 8.550786
HAYDN: String Quartets Op. 9, Nos. 2, 5 and 6 8.550787

The Kodály Quartet are in excellent form throughout Opus 9. Their simple eloquence in all three slow movements on the first disc serves Haydn well: the Largo of Op. 9/3 is ideally placed and beautifully poised. The players then go on to give a captivating account of the finale. Indeed, all the finales here are superb, showing Haydn at full stretch. The last of the set in A major opens with a very attractive Presto in 6/8, which is delightfully buoyant here. Fortunately, the Naxos recording team (in December 1992 and January 1993) have mastered the acoustics of the Unitarian Church in Budapest. The microphones are in the right place and the sound is not inflated.

American Record Guide

"Sonics are terrific, and Naxos sells at budget price, so I see no reason why you shouldn't run right out and buy!"

"As ever they [the Kodaly Quartet] are sympathetic Haydn exponents"
