Penguin Guide, January 2009

Oystein Birkeland and Håvard Gimse give the Sonata an alive and sensitive account, coupled with the early and unrepresentative Intermezzo in A minor. They are both imaginative players and are decently recorded. Given the modest outlay involved, this competes very strongly with its rivals, but even if it were at mid- or full-price it would be highly recommendable. Gimse’s performance of the early Piano Sonata, Op. 7 is also very good indeed. Altogether a first-rate bargain.

Gramophone

"Birkeland and Gimse play it with enough imaginative vitality and warmth to melt the proverbial heart of stone"

CD Review

"[Piano Sonata] The opening is charged with electricity and passion, his playing full of verve in the bravura passage work, whilst he imbues the lyrical moments with real sensitivity"

Repertoire

"Oystein Birkeland est excellent et son Ruggieri de 1680 possede une sonorite sublime (Oystein Birkeland is excellent and his 1680 Ruggieri has a sublime sound)"
