Patsy Morita, January 2011

Multi-prize-winning pianist Bernd Glemser recorded all of Sergey Rachmaninov’s piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for Naxos between 1998 and 2000 with conductor Antoni Wit and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. This two-disc set presents them together in one package. At the time, Glemser had already begun to develop a reputation as an excellent performer of virtuosic works. These recordings helped establish Glemser more specifically as a interpreter of Rachmaninov, with the ability to brilliantly and easily meet the technical challenges of the music. Both Wit and Glemser, bring a clarity and sparkle to the Rhapsody and give all of the music an appropriate amount of Romantic feeling without getting too sentimental. For the budget-minded consumer, this is a fine performance of these popular concertos.
