The early, tonal Symphonic Variations make an attractive introduction to the second of Naxos’s discs in what aims to cover his complete orchestral music. The Little Suite is an approachable work too, before the much tougher and more substantial symphony and concerto, which make up the greater part of the disc. In two massive movements, Hesitant and Direct, the Symphony No. 2 is an uncompromising piece, and here it is helped by a purposeful, very well-rehearsed performance. The Piano Concerto is even more elusive, often fragmentary, but again the performance is magnetic Paleczny plays with a clarity and brilliance that sound totally idiomatic. Excellent sound, with good presence.
