Christian Benda uses a small chamber orchestra. Strings alone, with a minimum of vibrato, play the framing Ricercars. The first group of canons add in flute, oboe and bassoon; in the second group, the stringed instruments predominate. A harpsichord joins in the first, and the cor anglais and bassoon dolorously share the last (common) solution of the four offered alternative proposals for solving Bach’s so-called ‘puzzle canon’. The recording is excellent, clear yet with a pleasing bloom, and the result, if a little didactic at times, is undoubtedly fresh.
