Penguin Guide, January 2009

On Naxos Summerly with his talented group of ten singers—two of them doubling as soloists—give a compelling reading of Schütz’s vivid and compact telling of the Christmas Story. Aptly austere in its overall manner, with clear instrumental accompaniment, it yet brings out the beauty and vigour of the numbers depicting the different groups, in turn the angels, the shepherds and the wise men. The scholarly credentials are impeccable, with excellent notes provided, and the recording, made in Hertford College, Oxford, is full and vivid. The motets and the psalm-setting make a welcome fill-up.

"The singing and playing are consistently lovely and the sound is warm and clear"
