new-classics.co.uk, December 2016

The Italian composer, Giovanni Maria Trabaci, was one of the most important musical innovators in the seventeenth century. A skilled organist, his major church appointments in the Naples area provided him with the financial stability to write 165 works for the keyboard, many of which are adaptable for organ, harpsichord or instrumental groups. In technical accomplishment and harmonic experimentation they surpassed other works composed at that time and became the earliest examples of the musical period subsequently defined as the ‘Baroque’ era. On this valuable triple-CD set the music is elegantly performed on harpsichord and organ by the excellent Sergio Vartolo. © 2016 new-classics.co.uk

"Vartolo matches pieces with instruments well; two galliards played on the small, rather rustic-sounding spinettone make me feel as if I'm eavesdropping in the private rooms of the maestro di cappella on his day off. Sound is superb. At Naxos's inexpensive prices, there's absolutely no reason to pass up these incredible, lively performances. I know I'll return to this collection often."
