Penguin Guide, January 2009

The fifth volume of Naxos’s excellent LutosÅ‚awski series provides an excellent cross-section for anyone wanting to sample this inspired composer’s work. The settings of the surrealist poet, Henri Michaux, dating from the early 1960s, are highly original in their use of choral textures, and Mi-parti in a single span, slow then fast, points forward in the brilliance and originality of its interplay of instruments to the later symphonies. Strong and purposeful performances, vividly recorded in full, immediate sound.
