Steven Rings
American Record Guide, October 2002

"Johann Kaspar Mertz's collection Bardenklange, or "Bardic Sounds", played expertly here by Adam Holzman, contains the most notable guitar representatives of the genre. Written by the Vienna-based guitarist in the late 1840s, the brief works of the set capture something of the musical spirit of character pieces like Mendelssohn's Songs without Words, Schubert's Moments Musicaux, and Schumann's numerous miniatures. Mertz even captures the poetic sensibility of such works, supplying his pieces with fanciful or folkloric titles and ready literary allusions. Naxos's sound is great as usual, and the liner notes by Richard Long are excellent."

John Duarte

"Adam Holzman supplies the necessary virtuosity and sense of style, while mercifully avoiding any lapse into schmaltz, and plays with great clarity and beauty of sound. No less laudable are the quality of the recording itself and Richard Long's exceptionally fine annotation."
