Robert A. Moore
American Record Guide, May 2012

The main item here is Schubert’s longest song, ‘Der Taucher’, a 27-minute setting of Schiller’s 27-verse narrative poem about a tyrannical king, a beautiful princess, and a valiant knight. Bruns sings the second version…with the gift of a storyteller using lots of dramatic alternation between recitative and hurly-burly action…Mr Stalker wrote, “He has the right equipment—an attractive and well trained voice as well as vocal skills and interpretive aim…” © 2012 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide online

Douglas Stalker
American Record Guide, December 2001

"Martin Bruns is a 30-something Swiss baritone who went to Juilliard and works in Europe most of the time. This year he will do Billy Budd in Seattle. These Schiller songs are his first recording... He has the right equipment--an attractive and well-trained voice as well as vocal skills and interpretive aims..."

Zachary Lewis
Opera News, November 2001

"Martin Bruns and Ulrich Eisenlohr are hardly household names, but maybe they should be. Their disc of Schubert's Schiller-Lieder, the latest installment in a planned complete Schubert edition by Naxos, easily rivals lieder recitals recorded by established artists on a more expensive label.

Eisenlohr, pianist/artistic advisor for the entire Naxos Schubert project (as Graham Johnson was for the recently completed Schubert series on Hyperion), links the musical and literary texts vividly. For example, when a divine spirit enters the scene near the end of 'Der Alpenjager' ('The Alpine Hunter'), Eisenlohr tellingly stresses a IV-I - 'amen' - chord progression. Likewise, in 'Laura am Clavier' ('Laura at the Piano') Eisenlohr allows himself to fade into the background, so as to conjure the fingers of the poet's beloved at work instead.

Bruns's solid, expressive baritone is capable of booming resonance as well as soft, tender detail, and the pair creates engaging, intelligent readings that realize the bleeding romance of Schiller's texts as well as the transformative, almost scenic, power of Schubert's melodies. The excitement they convey is persuasive; the twenty-four minutes it takes to sing the tragic tale of 'Der Taucher' ('The Diver'), the most significant work on the disc, pass before you know it.

In the hands of Bruns and Eisenlohr, 'Der Taucher' begins to resemble a miniature, rather effective opera, complete with a fair maiden, terrifying cliffs and gripping action."

"Your visit [to these pieces] will be made all the easier by means of baritone Martin Bruns' sensitive, warm-toned, personable performances. His lyrical, clear voice is at times reminiscent of Dietrich Fischer-DieskauĀK pianist Ulrich Eisenlohr, who also is the artistic advisor for Naxos' ongoing Schubert-Lied-Edition project, is every bit as impressive here as in his earlier appearances in the series. The sound places the singer and piano in comfortable balance and allows Bruns' voice plenty of air in a slightly bright but friendly acoustic."
