Fine Music, March 2008

The first volume of de Falla’s piano music was such a delight; I could hardly wait to hear this. Ligorio has proved himself to be a most sensitive interpreter of the Spanish composer. …we come to a state of exquisite awareness as each little piece of magic unfolds. Ligorio has himself edited and enhanced the sketches left by de Falla, much to his own credit in making this work so accessible and providing the CD booklet notes. If you are in need of an antidote to the increasing complexity and volume built into today’s music, then this charming Cd and its companion volume may be just what you are looking for.

David's Review Corner, May 2007

As I commented when reviewing the first in this two disc series of piano music by Manuel de Falla, his place in today's concert repertoire resides in two colourful ballets and the piano concerto, Nights in the Garden of Spain. Though he was a highly productive composer, his output for solo piano was modest, this second disc largely relying on works from his youth and transcriptions of his ballet music. Even from his youngest years, as we hear in Cancion and Cortejo de los gnomes, he had already fallen under the spell of the French school of composition and particularly influenced by Debussy, but as pastiche they are charming and tuneful scores. There is much more of his personality in the Fantasia betica, his major work for the instrument composed in 1920 to a commission from Artur Rubinstein. Whereas his previous piano scores were short salon pieces, this is a lengthy and well-constructed work. Closing the disc with piano transcriptions from his ballets, Daniel Ligorio felt that the composer had strayed too far away from the original orchestral score of El sombrero de tres picos and has recast the suite in a way as to capture the orchestral colours. He has presented himself with a stiff technical challenge without the obvious reward of a showpiece. He is a neat and tidy pianist with admirable clarity and an instinctive feel for the composer. I have heard better piano sounds from Naxos, but a pleasing release.

I have been eagerly awaiting the second instalment in Daniel Ligorio's complete survey of Falla's piano music since reviewing the first album. Although virtually unknown in the UK, Ligorio is regarded as one of the leading young soloists in his native Spain and with good reason. Ligorio has gone back to Falla's sketches in order to represent the composer's transcriptions as faithfully as possible. There are two world premiere recordings included here, and the transcriptions are accompanied by six pieces composed for piano.
