Penguin Guide, January 2009

The Epic of Gilgamesh comes from Martinů’s last years and is arguably his masterpiece. It evokes a remote and distant world, full of colour and mystery. Gilgamesh is the oldest poem known to mankind. The work abounds with invention of the highest quality and of consistently sustained inspiration. The Marco Polo performance is committed and sympathetic and the recording very natural in its balance.

"The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the finest products of Martinu's rich final decade. Testimony to the composer's broad literary interests, this oratorio brings to life with mystic intensity one of the world's most ancient tales of love and the hereafter. This performance...has much to recommend it."
