It is good that Gunzenhauser’s comprehensive Liadov collection has been transferred from full-price Marco Polo to bargain-price Naxos. They are well played and recorded versions of this colourful and imaginative music, and certainly worth the very modest cost.
"...Gunzenhauser presents a dazzling array of Liadov's most remarkable orchestral miniatures... Gunzenhauser proves to be a perceptive interpreter of the Russian repertory. Indeed, his Enchanted Lake is one of the best around -- richly atmospheric, lyrical, and gently flowing... In other hands the Polonaises can seem trite and bombastic, but not here. Gunzenhauser's brisk pacing and incisive rhythms make them sound wonderfully fresh and exciting. At the same time he uncovers more color and melodic richness than any of his competitors. Gunzenhauser's riveting Kikimora demostrates his remarkable ability to tell a story in musical terms."
